But the news of the swift fall of not only the Sacred Kingdom but also the religious state of Astoria and the elven settlements in the Forest of Mirage reminded humanity of the threat. Facing the peril head-on, all felt the urgency for immediate action. But the nations could not reach a consensus: some allied and formed an armed division to combat Ashley; others banked on defense, expectant the situation would turn around. Some were even scheming to gain Ashley as their ally. Chaos reigned. Meanwhile, Ashley observed the quarreling strife with a weary smile and spent his days immersing himself in magical research to aid his real ambition instead. Gareth, which bears some resemblance to the females-only Sacred Kingdom, had been allied with the Sacred Kingdom to keep the emerging state of Astoria, which had been imposing its religious views on the world, under control. After Ashley took control of the Sacred Kingdom, they broke the alliance and severed diplomatic relations. At that point, Empress Berta Tristan made her move to invade. When Ashley learned this was due to completing their research and manufacturing process of artificial subhumans, it stirred his curiosity.
